Better Mondays

How Your Dog's Bark Beats the Monday Blues

Mornings are hard. Mondays can feel even harder. The alarm clock goes off, but my brain would rather stay tucked beneath the covers, holding on to those last few moments of sleep. Before my feet even touch the floor, the weight of the week ahead already seems to settle in.

And then—there's my dog.

Before I can hit the snooze button again, I hear the first bark. Not demanding. Not impatient. Just… a gentle reminder. A few seconds later comes the familiar tap-tap-tap of paws across the hardwood floor. Then a cool nose nudges my hand, as if to say, "We've got this. Let's get moving."

It's become our unofficial morning routine. He barks, I groan. I mumble something about needing coffee while he tilts his head like he's already wide awake. He stretches. I stretch. Somehow, without ever planning it, we've become each other's morning coaches. He motivates me to get out of bed, and I reward him with his favorite part of the day—a walk, a game in the yard, or simply the chance to explore the morning together.

Research has shown that dogs can help establish healthy daily routines, encourage regular physical activity, and reduce stress. Having a dog waiting for you each morning provides a simple but meaningful sense of purpose that makes getting out of bed a little easier.

For me, he's more than a pet. He's my accountability partner, walking buddy, and enthusiastic cheerleader wrapped up in one furry package.

Mondays may never become my favorite day of the week, but they're a lot easier when I don't face them alone. My dog's bark isn't just another morning sound—it's an invitation to get up, step outside, breathe the fresh air, and start the day together.

Because no matter how busy or challenging the week ahead may be, there's something special about beginning it with two friends—one human, one dog—choosing to greet the morning side by side.
