If your dog seems more anxious lately, you're not alone. Research in animal behavior suggests that dogs are highly attuned to the emotional states of the people they live with. Through body language, tone of voice, facial expressions, and daily routines, dogs can respond to changes in our emotions and environment, sometimes reflecting increased household stress with behavioral changes of their own.

What may appear as clinginess, excessive barking, restlessness, or changes in routine can have many possible causes, including stress, environmental changes, medical conditions, or behavioral factors. If these behaviors are new or persistent, it's always worth discussing them with your veterinarian.

Supporting an Anxious Dog

Fortunately, veterinary medicine offers several evidence-informed approaches that may help support dogs experiencing stress or anxiety. The most effective plan often combines behavioral training, environmental management, and, when appropriate, veterinarian-recommended supplements or medications.

1. Melatonin

Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone involved in regulating sleep–wake cycles. In veterinary medicine, it is sometimes used under veterinary guidance to help support dogs experiencing situational anxiety, including noise-related fears, travel, or changes in routine. It may also be recommended for certain dermatologic and endocrine conditions in specific cases.

Because appropriate dosing varies depending on the dog's size, age, health status, and reason for use, melatonin should be given only under the guidance of a veterinarian.

2. Hemp-Derived Supplements

Hemp-derived products have become an active area of veterinary research. Some studies suggest that certain hemp-based formulations may help support calm behavior in some dogs, although research is still evolving and results vary among products. Quality, formulation, and ingredient composition differ substantially between supplements, making veterinary guidance especially important.

Owners should select products specifically formulated for dogs and consult their veterinarian before introducing any hemp-derived supplement, particularly if their dog is taking other medications.

3. Behavior Modification and Positive Training

Positive reinforcement training and structured behavior modification remain the foundation of anxiety management for many dogs. Working with a qualified trainer or veterinary behaviorist can help identify anxiety triggers and gradually teach dogs more confident responses through consistent, reward-based techniques.

Environmental enrichment, predictable routines, regular exercise, and providing safe spaces at home can also help many dogs feel more secure during stressful situations.

Caring for Both Ends of the Leash

Dogs are remarkably perceptive companions. Maintaining a calm household, providing regular routines, and spending quality time together can benefit both people and their pets. Daily walks, play sessions, training, and quiet moments of interaction all help strengthen the human–animal bond while supporting emotional well-being.

The Takeaway

Anxiety in dogs is often manageable with the right combination of veterinary care, behavioral support, and a stable home environment. If your dog's behavior has changed or anxiety is affecting their quality of life, your veterinarian can help determine the underlying cause and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan.

Supporting your dog's emotional health is an investment in the relationship you share—helping both of you enjoy a calmer, healthier life together.
