Do Dogs Have Menopause?
No. Unlike women, intact female dogs do not go through true menopause or ovarian burnout. Most keep having estrous cycles throughout life. As they age, cycles become irregular, the time between heats gets longer, and fertility declines. Veterinarians call this reproductive senescence. Spayed dogs are different: they lose ovarian hormones at surgery rather than gradually.
Menopause-Like Signs in Senior Dogs
Aging still disrupts canine hormone balance. Shifts in adrenal sex hormones, thyroid function, and cortisol can produce signs that look like menopause:
Restless nights and nighttime pacing
Thinning coat and dull, dry skin
Weight gain and lower energy
Anxiety and irritability
Sleep Hygiene and the Aging Canine Brain
A 2023 polysomnographic study of 28 senior dogs (Mondino et al., Frontiers in Veterinary Science) found that dogs with higher dementia scores spent less time in NREM and REM sleep and slept more shallowly. Poor sleep and canine cognitive dysfunction can feed each other. These habits support a healthier sleep-wake cycle:
Consistent bedtimes
Daytime exercise and daylight exposure
A dark, quiet sleeping area
A calm evening routine
Melatonin for Sleep and Hormone Balance
Melatonin is the pineal hormone that signals nighttime. Veterinarians widely use it to support sleep in senior dogs. Research from the University of Tennessee (Ashley et al., JAVMA, 1999; Frank, Hnilica and Oliver, Veterinary Dermatology, 2004) showed that oral melatonin lowers estradiol and other sex hormones in dogs. That supports its use for hormone-responsive hair-cycle disorders such as Alopecia X. Because melatonin also influences cortisol and insulin, avoid it in breeding dogs and use caution in dogs with diabetes or other endocrine disease.
Evening Support Plan for Senior Dogs
Give melatonin each evening alongside a consistent routine and anti-inflammatory nutrition. Doc Itchy® Hair, Skin & Nails Chews provide EPA omega-3 and vitamin A for skin and coat support. Ask your veterinarian to set the right melatonin dose and to rule out hypothyroidism, Cushing's disease, and pain. Free owner handouts are available at docitchytools.com.
