Understanding Touch, Smell, and Attachment

Anyone who shares life with a doodle knows they often earn the nickname "Velcro dog." Mine can't stay across the room for more than a few minutes. He always wants to be touching me—a paw resting on my leg, his body leaning against mine, or his chin gently balanced on my foot. That's part of what makes these dogs so special. They don't just share your home—they share your space.

When your dog loves to stay close, the condition of their skin and coat becomes even more important. Doodles are known for their soft, curly coats, but without regular care, matting, dryness, or yeast-related odors can make those close moments less enjoyable. A healthy, well-maintained coat keeps cuddles comfortable for both you and your dog.

Research has shown that positive physical touch between people and their dogs can reduce stress-related hormones while increasing oxytocin, often called the "bonding hormone," in both species. Every gentle stroke down your dog's back strengthens your relationship and promotes a sense of calm. A clean, soft coat simply makes those interactions even more enjoyable.

Maintaining a healthy doodle coat doesn't have to be complicated. Regular bathing with a gentle dog shampoo helps remove dirt, allergens, and excess oils while keeping the coat fresh. Daily or frequent brushing prevents mats, distributes natural skin oils, and helps maintain the soft texture doodles are known for. Appropriate skin care products recommended by your veterinarian may also help support dogs prone to skin irritation or recurrent yeast problems.

Good nutrition also plays an important role in skin and coat health. Essential nutrients such as vitamin A, zinc, omega fatty acids, and other skin-supporting nutrients help maintain healthy skin and a resilient coat as part of a balanced diet. If your dog has ongoing skin or coat concerns, your veterinarian can recommend the most appropriate nutritional or topical support.

Your Velcro dog probably isn't going to stop leaning against you—and that's part of their charm. By keeping their skin healthy, their coat clean, and their curls well cared for, every cuddle becomes exactly what it should be: soft, comforting, and one of the best parts of sharing life with a devoted companion.
