Travel is exciting for us, but for many dogs it can bring unfamiliar routines, new environments, and temporary separation from the people they love. Whether you're heading out for a weeklong vacation or a weekend getaway, planning for your dog's emotional well-being is just as important as packing your suitcase. For some dogs, veterinarian-recommended calming supplements containing hemp-derived ingredients and melatonin may provide additional support during these transitions.

Hemp-Derived Ingredients

Hemp seed oil is valued for its nutritional content, including omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids that support healthy skin, coat, and overall wellness. Some veterinary calming supplements also contain hemp-derived compounds that are formulated specifically for dogs. Research into these ingredients continues to grow, with some studies suggesting they may help promote relaxation in certain dogs. Products should always be THC-free and formulated specifically for pets.

Melatonin

Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone produced by mammals that helps regulate the body's sleep–wake cycle. In veterinary medicine, melatonin is commonly used to support dogs experiencing situational stress, disrupted sleep, noise sensitivities, or travel-related anxiety. It may also be prescribed for certain dermatologic conditions, depending on the individual dog's needs.

Supporting Calm During Travel

When used under veterinary guidance, calming supplements that combine melatonin with appropriate hemp-derived ingredients may help some dogs feel more relaxed during travel, boarding, or temporary changes in routine. For dogs that experience mild situational stress, these products may support more restful behavior and help them adjust more comfortably to unfamiliar surroundings.

Supplements work best as part of a broader travel plan. Maintaining familiar routines, providing favorite toys or bedding, using positive reinforcement, and ensuring your dog receives plenty of exercise and mental enrichment before travel can all help reduce stress during your absence.

Before You Travel

If you're considering a calming supplement, speak with your veterinarian before your trip. They can recommend the most appropriate product, dosage, and timing based on your dog's age, medical history, medications, and individual temperament. Introducing any new supplement several days before travel also allows you to monitor your dog's response before relying on it during your trip.

With thoughtful preparation, familiar routines, and appropriate veterinary guidance, many dogs can navigate travel-related changes with greater comfort and confidence. Sometimes, a little extra support is all they need to help them feel safe until you're home again.
